Autism Symptoms and Potential Treatments

Autism is a neurological disorder that typically strikes children that appear to develop normally but one day begin to display bizarre symptoms. The disorder is typically diagnosed by the age of three but this is variable depending on the symptoms.

Infants with autism tend to have abnormal reactions to stimuli, either over or under. Smells may be overwhelming, touch may be distinguished as painful and common noises may cause crying spells that seem never-ending. As the child ages, other signs such as preferring to play alone and discomfort when cuddling may appear. Toys can go ignored and relationships with others are stalled. Language development in autistic children is impaired. There may be repetitive words, patterns of speech and gestures used as an effort to communicate. Repetitive actions are also common. Arm flapping, spinning in circles and habitual tapping can be exhibited in older children. Parents should always have supervision over children that suffer from autism as they are likely to begin to harm themselves. These children do not register pain normally and have no sense of fear.

Many advocates have attempted to blame childhood immunizations for autism. Testing is continuing but the argument and results are controversial. Treatment plans for those with autism are still developing. Pediatricians and specialists insist that the earlier the autism is diagnosed, the chances of successful treatment increase.

Behavior modification can be used to target the negative aspects of autism such as aggression, repetitive behaviors and inappropriate outbursts. The theory is that rewarding a good behavior will teach the child what is acceptable while ignoring the negative acts will teach the child to stop. A therapist would work directly with the patient providing intense treatment while teaching the child's caregiver mechanisms to help at home.

Sensory and social integration exercises are proven to reduce the child's sensitivity to different objects or foreign things. The social integration aspect involves encouragement of improving social skills by exposing the child to one on one play with the therapist while the child takes the lead. These practices are shown to improve emotional development and helping with learning.

Speech therapy is a form of communication therapy that teaches autistic individuals to express themselves with words and language instead of gestures or repetitive sounds. If speaking is not a possibility, picture exchanges can help the patient communicate. Instead of using language, the child gives the therapist or parent a picture that depicts what they are feeling or needing.

Some medical professionals believe that vitamins and supplements can help autistic people with many issues. Vitamin B and cod liver oil added to the child's diet can help improve behavior, attention span and make learning easier. Vitamin C may also reduce depression or sadness that is common in people with autism.

Clay baths is yet another treatment that some autistic children are experiencing improvements in their symptoms after several months of application. For additional details read this article: Clay Baths

I would advise that you try more than one treatment, each one for at least three months, one at a time for testing purposes, and see if your child feels any better. Then, only stick with the treatments that seem to help your child.
