Autism Program That Intends to Treat Autistics

No matter how autistic a person is, there are always ways and means to help them grow and have the benefit of normal living. There are a lot of studies and researches made all over the world. Then a program is developed and is now in practice to help control the worst effects of autism. Considering that having an autistic member in the family is a big hassle, there are well developed programs that is being practice. I will give you the most effective program that will surely help and bring them to improvement.

There are programs which intend them to grow their minds, treat all kinds of impairments, social skill programs, quality educational indicators program, and therapeutic programs for autism spectrum disorder. Another program is for the aid in one aspect being verbally impaired and the last one is to maintain their focus on a listening program. Three major components are essential to perform and governed with fragile look and supervision. These programs can be in the form of a simple activity, which can sometimes lead to a worst scenario if misguided. But a good effect will yield of processed correctly and scientifically.

Growing minds program has a focus and step by step process to make it more effective. This program is a play based activity, relationship oriented method, and their educational methods focus on the improvement of physiological side and strategies of the person's sensory. This will engage them to emerge and increase their skills. Processes on the auditory system are maintained to reduce their sensitivity to sounds.

A verbal impaired program is focused on their ability to think behind the factors which will develop their neurons feeding back ability. Games are being used in here to train their cognition when it comes to light and sound effects. Brain builder strategy is observed in this program for their listening, supplements when it comes to nutrition, and even therapeutic music.

Listening program is connected to motor and speech ability to control urge. Expressions on this program is the focus like musical expression, integration of the sensory nerves, build a good mood away from tantrums, motivating their selves to have a self esteem, do and cooperate in any social interactions. Some activities on this program includes reading and writing, physiological balance and even coordination to integrate their senses.

The focus of these programs is to minimize the negative behavior of an autistic person. These may not help them recover totally, but they will have an advance understanding of their situation and have an awareness that is necessarily needed to treat autistics. Programs for autism are available and you just have to choose the appropriate one to make it more effective and reliable. But this again must be administered with maximum supervision for their safety and minimum supervision like feeding them the results of their actions. It is best that they figure out a certain situation with their own discoveries as this also improve their cognitive learning and advance strategies.

How to Treat Anxiety Disorders Using Resource Anchors

An anxiety disorder is a general term mental health professionals use to describe a condition of abnormal and pathological fear and feeling of anxiousness. Although there are many different types of anxiety related disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and panic disorder, the traditional treatment approach usually involves a combination of medication and talk therapy.

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

The common theme across most anxiety-type disorders identified in the DSM-IV ™ is the expression of fears that are irrational and usually not founded on fact. The problem is both persistent and pervasive throughout many aspects of a person's life. In severe instances, the fears and associated feelings interfere with an individual's ability to cope with daily life. Anxiety can occur in lesser degrees than a full-blown anxiety disorder. Test anxiety is a great example of an irrational fear that people develop, which in turn negatively affects their ability to perform well on an exam. People who experience test anxiety may or may not meet the diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder, but situationally, their feelings of stress can be equally as debilitating.

Anxiety is a mental and emotional state (in the head) that is expressed in a variety of terms: heart pounding, shaking, difficulty breathing, chest and abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, restlessness, fatigue, keyed-up, irritable, difficulty sleeping and/ or concentrating, muscular tension, and extreme fear (of death, loss of control, and insanity). In most cases, the feelings are known as internal kinesthetic representations. This means the feelings of anxiety are felt (kinesthetic) internally as a response to the irrational thoughts and fears. Interestingly, the descriptions provided in the DSM-IV TM are cognitive based. The thoughts and fears may be irrational creations of the mind, but the reactions to the events are physical. This article will focus on how to treat anxiety disorders in such a way that alters the internal representations.

Types of Internal Representations

Internal representations are the ways we think about represent the world in our minds. They are formed as a result of sensory input (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and smelling) we receive from the outside world. In the case of anxiety, internal representations are created, not necessarily from information we receive from the outside world, but as distorted representations created in the mind. For example, a person who suffers from arachnophobia (extreme fear of spiders) at the mere mention of the word spider may create a picture in their head of a huge spider that is scarier and more frightening than any real spider they might encounter. That picture is both Visually created (Vc) and internally Kinesthetic (Ki) because of the physical reaction the person feels.

Because different people have different processing approaches, effective treatment of anxiety disorders should involve the discovery of an individual's representational strategy-how the process and store information in memory. Many people, even those without an anxiety disorder, engage in negative and self-destructive self-talk. That is, they say things to themselves like "I could never do that", "I'm not good enough for... ", or "I'm not smart enough to... ". The negative self-talk creates what is called an Auditory Digital (Ad) internal representation that then might be expressed with a Kinesthetic (Ki) response such as muscle tension, shortness of breath, etc. When an individual's strategy involves multiple representational systems overlapping working together, the strategies involve synesthesia-a perceptual condition of mixed sensations.

Our "As If" World

Why do people use synesthesia as a processing strategy? According to Ericksonian therapist David Higgins, we all live in an "as if" world. We constantly make guesses about what will happen next. We justify this behavior by thinking our guesses are be based on past experiences, but in reality, they are future generated hallucinations. As such, they have the potential to generate feelings of hope or fear, happiness or pain. This is an active ongoing process that can be healthy and invigorating. If the representations go awry, however, it can generate the feelings of stress and fear associated with anxiety disorders. Severe anxiety is a disorder of the "As if" process that results from cognitive distortions of the internal representations.

How to Treat Anxiety Disorders by Changing Internal Representations

Some of the most debilitating effects of anxiety disorders are the kinesthetic (feeling) responses that interfere with the ability to function. If an individual is experiencing a pounding heart, shortness of breath, and muscle tension, it will be very difficult from them to participate in any sort of cognitive task (work, school, sports, etc.) including talk therapy. The physical response will take over shadow any ability to reason. As such, one of the first steps to treatment should be to identify the individual's strategy for forming internal representations, and then create what is known in the Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) world as a Resource Anchor or anchoring a resource state. A resource state is a mental state that represents the thoughts a feelings a person desires such as calmness, joy, satisfaction or confident. The resource state can be anchored in such as way that the individual can access it whenever anxiety becomes an issue.

How to Anchor a Resource State

Identify a mental state you would like to experience more often (E.g., confident, content, empowered, relaxed, etc.).

Identify a specific time when you fully experienced that state. Relive the experience. See through your own eyes, hear through your own ears, and feel the sensations in your body.

Select an anchor by choosing a part of your body that is easy for you to touch, but not a part that is usually touch during daily activities. Examples of possible anchor locations include an earlobe, knuckle, skin between two fingers, etc.

Re-access the resource experience you identified in step 2. As you feel that the state is about to reach its maximum intensity (just before the peak experience), touch or squeeze the part of your body you selected as your anchor site. Adjust the pressure of your touch to match the degree of intensity of your feeling of the resource state.

Repeat step 4 as often as necessary, each time enhancing your experience of the state. NOTE: If done correctly, you should need to anchor the feeling only once to be effective.

Test your anchor by clearing your mind and simply touching your self-anchor experience. Touching you anchor site should bring back the desired feeling or emotional state. If it doesn't, repeat the anchoring process until it does work.

Once you have easy access to your resource state, it should be simple to access the relaxed, confident, or other desired state you anchored. There are no limits to the number of anchors you can create. Just be careful to select different anchor sites unless you are stacking anchors to make one anchor especially intense.

It is also possible to create internal anchors by imaging a color vividly in your mind's eye. You can then associate the imagined color with a desired feeling or state.

Other Tools for Reducing Treating Anxiety Disorders

Reframing

Reframing is an NLP that involves using language patterns to "reframe" the perceptual distortions typical of anxiety disorders. Nothing that exists in this world has meaning on its own. People assign meaning according to their beliefs, values, likes and dislikes, and other preoccupations. The meaning of an experience, then, is dependent on the context of the experience. Reframing is a strategy that works to change the way someone perceives an event and thereby changes the meaning. When the meaning changes, the response and behavior also changes.

Alter the Submodalities

In NLP, submodalities are the specific characteristics of the Internal Representation. For instance, we've already mentioned Visual and one form of internal representation. Visual images have distinctive characteristics like black and white vs. color, near or far, do you see yourself in the picture or are you looking through your own eyes, size of the picture, and bright or dull. Sometimes changing the submodalities of an experience can reduce the intensity of the experience.

Integrating Beliefs

It was stated earlier that anxiety disorders are based on irrational thoughts and feelings. Anxiety and panic responses are incongruent with the rest of a person's life. It's as if the part of the person that is control at the time of the panic or anxiety attack has its own intentions, beliefs and behavior that are different from the intentions, beliefs and behavior of the same person when they are calm. There are numerous NLP techniques that are useful for integrating the parts to create congruency in the person's thoughts and feelings and eliminating the irrational thoughts and feelings that create the anxiety. Examples of these techniques include, but are not limited to: Parts Integration, Timeline Therapy, Mental Emotional Release and Core Transformation TM.

Conclusion

The purpose of this article was not to argue with techniques for treating anxiety disorders involving medication and traditional counseling approaches. Rather, it was to describe approaches that deal directly with the source of the problem that is common to all anxiety-related disorders. Working with internal representations and their submodalities offers new options for individuals who suffer from anxiety disorders as well as for people who work to treat anxiety disorders in the everyday practice. The combinations of techniques that are a part of the practice of NLP are relatively easy to use and have a lower risk factor than some of the more traditional approaches to treatment.

Children's Health - How to Treat Autism in a Conventional Perspective

I. Definition

Conventional medicine is also known as Western medicine. It is a system of medical approach in which medical doctor and other health professionals such as nurses, medical technician and specialists and therapists, etc. use medication, radiation, medical equipments or surgery to treat symptoms of disease and diseases.

II. How conventional medicine effects autism

A. Diagnosis

For the disease to be treated effectively, the conventional doctor first has to diagnose what causes the symptoms of the disease or diseases. It is helped by blood test, logical screen, psychological and physical examination, etc. The diagnosis of children with development disorder is always a stressful and time consuming road for both parent and children, because each doctor in conventional medicine mostly specializes in one field and can not make any suggestion outside of his or her professional judgement. You may be recommended to see other specialists if one found to be necessary. Since autism is complex disease, it requires a team of doctor before it can be diagnosed correctly and many wrong diagnosis have been done, leading to overwhelming pressure and time wasting to the parent and their children. Fortunately, many cases of autism have been correctly diagnosed and are treated accordingly.

To avoid wasting your time, here is the basic list of doctors and specialists who have been required for all children with development disorder to be diagnosed correctly:

a. Development and behaviour pediatrician

b. Paediatric neurologist

c. Children psychiatrist

d. Children psychologist

e. Speech and language pathologist

f. Occupational therapist

g. Physical therapist

h. Play therapist

i. Social worker

Some children may require more or less specialists than the list above in their road to find a cure, but we believe the list is a basic team for fast and corrected diagnosis.

B. Types of conventional treatment

1. Animal therapy

Animal therapy focus to improve in the inter action between the child and animal, thereby increasing the child confident in building relation ship as well as sensory and motor issues.

2. Auditory integration therapy

The program uses modified music and sound with an aim to correct the problems of child's in processing and understanding speech and sound.

3. Augmentative communication

Augmentative communication helps to support the child's communication output by acting as a bridge until speech develops or by providing an alternative if speech fails to develop. It includes picture exchange communication, picture and symbol displays, technological support for communication, sign language and body language.

4. Behaviour treatments

The aims of behaviour treatment is to help the autistic children to overcome the emotional , behavioural and cognitive dysfunction through a goal-oriented, systematic procedure. It is said that this types of treatment have proven to be successful in treating mood, anxiety, personality, eating, substance abuse, and psychotic disorders in some degrees.

5. Chelation

Since children with autism have a weakened secretion system, Cchelation helps to remove heavy metals accumulated in the brain through medication taken by IV or by mouth or rubbed on the skin. Although, it is a new treatment, but in theory, it decreases physical and behaviour problems.

6. Diet

Daily diet is always important for autistic or non autistic children. Since most autistic children have problem of weakened immune system and problem with toxic elimination, intake of foods which help to strengthen immune and improve toxin secretion will do no harm while avoiding intake of foods which may elevate the allergic and gastrointestinal problem are always essential. Choosing fresh and organic foods carefully will always help to reduce metabolic conditions for autistic children.

7. Discrete trial training

Discrete trial training is a program which helps to improve the basic skills for autistic children

a) Pre learning skills such as sit, attending, look at your class mate and teacher, etc.

b) Safe skills such as know their name, address, parent phone number, etc

Before the children can proceed the more complex language, academic and social skills by beginning of with a breaking off the skills into small part and taught in repetitive drills. The process of the children is record and rewarded if the response is appropriate.

8. Facilitated communication

The program helps the non verbal students to communicate with others while someone helps to support their hands and arm.

9. Immunological treatments

The types of therapy helps to alter immune system deficit for children with autism, including steroid, infusion and intravenous munoglobulin, depending to the child's diagnosis. These treatments may carry long term health risk. There are many herbs which can help such as ginko boliba if you want to use herb or other alternative treatment for this type of disorder, please consult with your doctor before applying.

10. Medication

Medicine used by conventional medicine to treat some symptoms of autism such as hyperactive, anxiety, moodswing, seizure, gastrointestinal disorder have been proven very effective, but with some side effects, therefore it is for the child benefit to keep the dose as low as possible:

a ) Tranquilizers

i) Effects

Tranquilizers include thioridazine (Mellaril), chlorpromazine (Thorazine), haloperidol (Haldol) and risperidol (Risperdal) which help to treat symptoms of behaviour problem by regulating the production of dopamine, thereby increasing their attention and concentration in school and at home thus making them more able to learn.

ii) Side effect of tranquilizers include

*Sedation or sleepiness.

** Less common side effects include changes in the function of the liver, effects on blood cells, restlessness or agitation, sensitivity of the skin to the sun, and true allergic reactions

*** Re occurrence of the symptoms if the medication is stopped

b) Serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitor

i) Effects

It works well for children with depression and anxiety disorders, by regulating the production of serotonin which is vital for responsible and controlling the fundamental physiological aspects of the body

ii) Side effects

*Urinary retention

** Easily agitated or upset.

*** Dizziness and Fatigue

**** Change in appetite and sleep and etc.

11. Musical therapy

Musical therapy focus in using music through singing, movement and musical instruments to assist learning of language, communication and social skills.

12. Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy is a type of program, helping to compromise physically, intellectually or emotionally to integrate coping skills into their lives in order to perform necessary tasks. but for children with autism, the main goal of occupational therapy is to integrate sensory perception through recognition and interpretation of sensory stimuli based chiefly on memory, therefore it helps the child to gain a more peaceful frame of mind and concentrate on certain tasks.

13. Play therapy

Play therapy is focus in using plays to improve the language, speech, communication, emotional and social skills.

14. Physical therapy

Physical therapy is also known as physiotherapy. The main goal of this program is to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability for the children with autism, such as walking, jumping, running, etc. so that the children can increase their physical strength, balance and motility as well as better sensory integration.

15. Rapid-prompting method

Soma Mukhopadhyay is the founder of rapid-prompting method. The method involves constant, fast-paced questioning and combined with the use of a low-tech alphabet board for spelled communication to keep the students attention and prompt rapid response from the students.

16. Recreational therapy

Encouraging the child to participate in some types of sport such as swimming, gymnastic, dance etc., thereby increasing the child awareness of social interaction.

17. Relationship development intervention

Relationship development intervention believes autism children can adapt to authentic emotional relationships with others and different environments if they are given opportunity to learn them in a gradual, systematic way by using highly structured games, exercises, back and forth focused communication, share experience and plays with others of that help to build up the experience of interacting in social relationships.

18. Social skill group

Children plays together under supervision of parents and specialist such as psychologist, this helps to improve the social interaction and social skills, thereby increasing the child awareness of inappropriate behaviours and interest in playing with other children.

19. Social story

By telling simple story with lots of pictures and sometimes words, the program improves the autistic children self help and social skills and prepare the child for the change of routine and in new environment.

20. Son-rise

Son-rise is one of the method has been taught to parent with autistic children in the 70s, unfortunately there are no published independent study has tested the efficacy of the program. The program believes by accepting autistic children as they are, with no prejudgement and interacting with them with positive, enthusiastic way as well as encouraging the children in more meaningful communication of that can help the children overcome verbal and social interactive deficit.

21. Speech and language therapy

It is a program designed to improve the autistic children ability in speech production, vocal production, swallowing difficulties and language needs and the use of language. The program can be run through different contexts including schools, hospitals, and private clinic or therapist's office.

22. Treatment and education of autism and related communication-handicap

It is a class program with the aim to teach autistic children independent work, life by communication and social skills by focusing in repetitive routines, picture schedules and structural settings.

23. Verbal behaviour

It is first discovered by Skinner, a psychologist. It helps the children to language and speech by breaking off the sentence into small part and taught in systematic way by assessing the minute details of initial and progress communication skills through gaps filling. Parent are requested to response and reward their child as well. As the communicative skills progress, the children are taught to make request, ask question and engage in more complex conversation. The program is only a theory with little experimental research until recently.

24. Vision therapy

Vision therapy may be necessary, if the child is suspected to have problem of seeing or understanding and learning for what he or she see.

25. Vitamins and supplements

Since children with autism is lack of vitamin B6, vitamin E and other trace minerals, it is no harm if they are taken in small dose. If you want to use them or high doses, please consult with your child's doctor before applying.

In fact, there are no single type of treatment which is likely to be effective for all children and all families. Instead, intervention will need to be adapted to individual needs and the value of approaches.

How to Treat Sensory Processing Disorder

The body is designed in a way wherein the different sense organs work with the brain for the interpretation of the different senses so that we can exhibit the appropriate responses, both behavioral and motor. However, there are instances when the responses are not proper because of misinterpretation of the senses. This condition is called sensory processing disorder.

Sensory processing disorder (SPD) was formerly known as sensory integration dysfunction was first described by A. Jean Ayres, a neuroscientist who said that this disorder is similar to a 'traffic jam' that occurs in the neurons, wherein some parts of the brain are prevented from receiving the correct information so that sensory information are interpreted correctly. For someone who has SPD, what happens is that sensory information is perceived differently from that which is normal to other people. This will then result in behavior or responses that are unusual, which makes it hard to accomplish some tasks.

The exact causes of sensory processing disorder are not yet known, and are still subject to research studies. There have been results however saying that this is an inherited disorder, but there can also be environmental factors that can contribute to it. When this is not properly managed while a child is still young, it can result to several problems involving the child's emotional, education and social state. Because of the problems with the child's motor skills, he can become isolated from his peers, suffering from low self-esteem. There can also be poor self-concept and failure with academics. Those who are unaware of this disorder will be labeling the child as clumsy, disruptive or even uncooperative. When this gets worse, it will lead to depression, anger problems, anxiety and aggression.

The treatment of sensory processing disorder will warrant the services of an occupational therapist. The occupational therapist will provide sensory integration therapy for the child, wherein sensory stimuli and experiences will be taught to the child. There will also be sensory diet, a therapy where the therapist will plan and schedule activities for the child to address the different needs of the nervous system. There will be different techniques that will be included in the therapy such as calming, alerting and organizing. The treatment for SPD can also include alternative therapies depending on what the doctor says. One of the common therapies is therapeutic body brushing which is ideal for children who are oversensitive to sensory experiences. This will help the SPD patient to learn how to adjust to certain sensory stimulations.

There is no definite cure for sensory processing disorder for the treatments that were mentioned will only help the affected person learn how to adapt and react properly to stimulations. If you are taking care of a child who is suffering from SPD, you have to be patient when dealing with him, since it is not just frustrating for you but it is more difficult to the child. It will take some time before the child can learn the appropriate responses so you will have to assist him and make sure that he learns properly. And of course, you will need to assist him with developing his mental, emotional and social skills.

Methyl-B12 - Why You Should Treat Your Child's Autism With It

A Biomedical Autism Intervention Specialist Doctor, Explains:

Methylcobolamin, aka. Methyl-B12 as a vitamin is a very important treatment for individuals - children, teenagers and adults - on the autism-spectrum. It is also useful for individuals with other issues as well including attention deficit, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, sensory processing and speech/language problems. Why is it so important, and why should you be using it as a supportive treatment? Because Methyl-B12 is known to significantly help with higher cognitive function such as speech and language development, focusing and attention, improved environmental awareness, and more willingness to engage socially.

How does Methyl-B12 do this, and why should it be considered as an essential therapy for all individuals on the autism-spectrum? The bottom line is that it works well for many individuals.

Methyl-B12 supports an important biochemical system in our body called methylation. Methylation chemistry is critical for a variety of essential physiological effects including proper sequencing and production of brain chemistry such as dopamine and serotonin which are necessary for motor coordination, mood and focusing. Methylation supports healthy brain cell function by augmenting the production of glutathione which is necessary to protect the cells against toxins, i.e. heavy metals, chemicals. This process of glutathione production helps our body get rid of toxins. It also supports normal immune function and helps protect the brain against oxidative stress which causes tissue damage.

Methylation supports healthy cells throughout the body and brain to increase their communication capabilities. This is particular important in the brain where cell to cell communication is critical for proper brain function. Methylation also supports the integrity of our DNA which is crucial for our overall health and survival. Without methyation and the physiological support of Methyl-B12 our ability to function from a cognitive and speech/language standpoint would be greatly compromised.

Individuals on the autism-spectrum almost universally have a biochemical imbalance in their methylation chemistry which Methyl-B12 helps to support. The problem is many are not accessing their own body's stores of Methyl-B12 or the pathways that supports Methyl-B12 function are damaged and not working correctly. Hence the use of Methyl-B12 as a supplemental therapy (subcutaneous injection being the most ideal) is critical to help get individuals on the autism-spectrum back on track to improve their overall cognitive abilities, and for some on the road to eventual recovery.

Methyl-B12 has been called a wonder drug by many parents of children with autism. But is it right for YOUR child? There are a number of different types of Methyl-B12 to consider - some work well in treating autism, some don't. How do you know what is the right type to try? How do you give it, and how much do you give? These questions and more are answered in Dr. Woeller's new ebook, "The Amazing Benefits of Methyl B-12 for autism," available here: http://www.MethylB12ForAutism.com

Dr. Kurt Woeller is an autism biomedical specialist, with a private practice in Southern California for over 11 years. He has helped children recover from autism, ADD, ADHD, and other disorders, and has the information you need to help your child. Watch a video of a parent talking about her son's recovery from autism using Methyl-B12 and other biomedical autism intervention therapies at http://www.MethylB12ForAutism.com

How to Treat Sensory Processing Disorder

The body is designed in a way wherein the different sense organs work with the brain for the interpretation of the different senses so that we can exhibit the appropriate responses, both behavioral and motor.
