Autism Spectrum Disorder - Better Diagnosis Or Growing Epidemic?


Current incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD is unbelievably 1 out of every 95 children. As compared with the number of children diagnosed with this disorder in 1980, the percentage of ASD has quadrupled. In 1980, autism was considered a rare disorder, with an estimated 2-5 per 10,000 people.

Autism is generally diagnosed during a child's first 3 years of life, however new research is now identifies diagnostic indicators as early as 6 months. One may wonder what is happening to cause such a dramatic increase in this relatively new disability. Autistic children display difficulties in Sensory Integration Disorder (SID), comprehension problems, expressive language disorders, and a variety of social/pragmatic difficulties. A review of medical, professional, and research literature will result in an array of various explanations. An extensive review of the medical, professional, and autism interest group literature results in a wide diversity of opinion and explanation to the apparent escalating rise of autism. Some believe that autism has no cure, while others claim that there is a complete and definite cure.

During the 1970's, research data began to be reported which showed strong evidence in the role of genetics in the causation of autism. The theory of environmental influence in the causation of autism has only recently taken a more prominent stance amongst the professional and medical communities. In his book Changing the Course of Autism, Dr. Bryan Jepson states that even though finding the gene that triggers autism could lead to developing a medication for treatment, "understanding the role of the environment and studying the biochemistry of autistic children seems much more likely to lead to effective treatment immediately, and in fact would pinpoint which genes should be targeted...understanding the genetic factors requires understanding the impact of the environment on the genetic code." Most proponents of this theory do believe that there is a genetic predisposition to autism, however that changes in the environment and in the practice of modern day medicine are "activating", you might say, the genetic flaw.

As a Speech/Language Pathologist of 25 years, I have noted an unprecedented increase in the diagnosis of autism or one of the various diagnostic labels that fall within the autism spectrum of disorders among the pediatric client population I work. The "picture" of the typical autistic child has made dramatic and wide range changes in the years since beginning in the field of speech and language therapy. The profile of a regular classroom has been transformed in the past 20 years. School nurses are inundated with various medications from those for ADD/ADHD to Bipolar Disorder to ASD. So, are we experiencing an epidemic of Autism Spectrum Disorders or are we just getting better in diagnosing it? Regardless of the causation, children with autism can be helped! New technology, learning therapies, and integrative techniques are available to assist in better brain learning and networking. These new methods can increase the overall abilities for the autistic child so that he or she can learn to understand his or her world.

Continuing Autism Experiments Offer Better Quality of Life for Sufferers


As the number of cases of autism continues to grow worldwide, the world has responded with a number of different kinds of autism experiments in order to better the quality of life and ability to function of people suffering from this condition. These trials come in various shapes and sizes and produce a range of different results.

Presently, there are a number of experimental autism treatments that are being followed, including investigation the impact of light and sound, music, carnosine, and diet on both autistic adults and children.

Mind Alive uses a machine called DAVID, which stands for Digital Audio Visual Integration Device, and is carefully calibrated to use flashing lights and pulsing tones. Initially used for the treatment of ADD, anxiety, and other related disorders, its success lead to the belief that it could also reduce the symptoms of autism.

Working to desensitize autism sufferers from certain kinds of sensory problems, DAVID stimulates different parts of the brain through the sensory organs. Though the results vary from person to person, successes in the program after a few weeks of treatment include lowering hypersensitivity to sound, decreased defensiveness to touch, increased eye contact, lower levels of aggressive behavior, better social skills, and even augmented enjoyment of food with a lower likelihood for pickiness.

Other forms of autism research are looking into the impact of carnosine. Carnosine is a type of natural protein, which has been looked at in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of L-carnosine supplementation in children with autistic spectrum disorders.

31 patients were used in the eight week study that either gave them 400 mg BID powdered L-Carnosine or a placebo. The children were assessed at the start and finish of the trial using recognized autism rating scales and also parental observations. After the 8 weeks those children given the L-Carnosine showed improvements across all the rating scales, findings that were backed up by the parents. The children taking the placebos showed no significant improvement.

The children taking the supplement have seen fast and noticeable results which include more pleasure from life, better eye contact, improved communication - including receiving language and using language more effectively - easier socialization, improved fine motor planning, and an increased awareness of the environment around them.

Dr. Chez - the head of the carnosine autism trials in Chicago - has observed the results of patients after the first weeks and has witnessed better communication and behavior in 16 percent of cases. Socialization among these patients had improved by 27 percent.

Additionally there have been trials using music, which have seen dramatic positive results. These trials have been conducted by the ASU School of Music's Music Therapy Department. Its purpose is to discover how music can be used on autism sufferers to achieve desirable behaviors and functions. It applies carefully chosen sounds to specific situations in order to encourage certain results. These noises can range from simple sounds such as clapping or ringing a bell, to more complex musical pieces. Frequently the simpler sounds allow autism suffers to reestablish their concentration after losing their focus. Other results that have been achieved include improved relations with others, better communication, and simply functioning at a better level overall.

Following a GFCF diet involves eating a diet that is entirely gluten-free and casein-free. Gluten and casein are naturally occurring proteins that are found in wheat, barley, and rye (gluten) and milk (casein), as many parents, researchers, and doctors believe that the removal of these proteins cause positive results in autism suffers.

Specific favorable results include improvement (occasionally very good, but sometimes only mild) in communication, bowel movements, increased eye contact, better attention span and overall mood while reducing tantrums, self-stimulating and aggressive behaviors.

Results are due in 2008 from a long-term double blind study on the effects of a GFCF diet on autism.

Teaching Children With Autism Better Verbal Communication Skills


Children with autism commonly face problems with verbal communication. This is usually due to the frequent speech and language problems associated with the disorder. Though the actual reason that these problems are faced by autistic children is unknown, many experts believe that they are the result of several conditions occurring before, during, or after the child's birth that have had an impact on the development of the brain. The inability to properly communicate verbally can make interpretation and interaction with the child's world much more difficult.

The communication problems experienced vary from child to child, depending on the individual's social and intellectual development. While some may not be able to speak at all, others may maintain extensive vocabularies and can express themselves regarding complex topics. However, most children with autism experience some form of communication difficulty usually with the appropriate use of the language, for example difficulty with intonation, rhythm, and word and sentence meaning.

Autistic children who are able to speak may say things without true information, expression, or content. They are only words with no meaning to the situation. Others will use echolalia, where they simply repeat what they have heard, even if they have been asked a question. And yet other autistic children will use delayed echolalia, using the question previously posed in order to ask for what they want. For example, a child who had earlier been asked "are you hungry?" may say "are you hungry" at a later time to express his or her hunger.

Many autistic children will have a stock of phrases that they use in specific conditions. For example, a child may introduce him or herself at the beginning of every conversation. Some autistic children learn scripts from television shows, commercials, books, or other recorded dialogs.

Autistic children able to speak can frequently speak extensively about a topic without the ability to actually converse with others. They may also make up a voice to use other than their own such as a robot voice, a deep voice, a squeaky voice or another similar type of alteration.

It is possible to help an autistic child to better his or her verbal communication skills with improvements made through the use of appropriate treatments.

The first step is to consult a speech and language pathologist in order to have your child's communication skills evaluated. Specific treatments suitable for your child may be recommended during this evaluation.

No single method of communication treatment has been universally found to improve all autistic children, but starting early increases the chances of significant improvements. Try to target your child's specific communication strengths and weaknesses. Different forms of goal orientated therapy for useful communications are the most successful techniques, though not guaranteed to work for all children. Periodic in-depth evaluations from a specialist are recommended for perfecting and altering the therapy to best work for your child's unique needs.

Many parents find that consulting physical and occupational therapists can also be very helpful for helping to reduce unwanted behaviors during communication, which are common hindrances to the development of skills.

Find out what your child best responds to: a structured behavior modification program, an in-home therapy program, or another type of therapy that utilizes reality-based situations as a foundation for the therapy.

It may surprise you to discover that music therapy and sensory integration therapies may have a large impact on your child's ability to use verbal communication. This is because stimulation of the senses often helps to improve the child's ability to respond to sensory information, and therefore helps him or her recognize what he or she is hearing through verbal communication and seeing through non-verbal communication. The goal is to help improve the effectiveness of sensory understanding.

Medications may also improve an autistic child's attention span, which in turn can help to improve verbal communication in your child. However, with long-term medication use there is the possibility of undesirable side effects.

To be certain that your child is at his or her fullest potential, mineral and vitamin supplements, as well as a tailored diet, psychotherapy, and overcoming sleep challenges may greatly assist in focus and attention, which should help improve verbal communication.
